CAMINHO

Our 4th release opens a new door for our creative process. 'Caminho' was born out of the collaboration by Steve Coombes and Nādabindu (after collaborating on a soon to come Aŭskulti). Nādabindu asked for some saxophone tracks, Steve sent them, Nādabindu start recording some percussion (with a percussion based on an indian Tabla, a small Darbuka, a home made ocean drum, a cymbal and some other things. But also the portuguese square frame drum called Adufe), and in the middle of the process Nādabindu started recording is voice reading poems by Nuno Mangas Viegas (Tutmonda's own artwork and concept guy).

'Caminho' is an album in state and form of a poem. Steve Coombes' saxophone marks the temperature and intensity of light on the path that each track takes. Every Coombes' composition on this album is charged with a lyricism that not only surrounds itself so harmoniously with the spoken poetry, but even demands the presence of poetry alongside it.

Nādabindu's percussion builds the pulse of the album's living organism, systole and diastole, acceleration and pause. These musical elements firmly embrace the poems spoken by Nādabindu in a fluid and artefact-free cadence.

Notes on the cover artwork:

The main concept behind the construction of the cover's artwork for the album 'Caminho' was an ekphrastic exercise. Although the technique remains in line with the covers of previous Tutmonda's editions (cutting, collage and mixing as the basic and fundamental processes), the cover of 'Caminho' was constructed with images taken from some verses of the poems chosen for the various tracks.

In this way, this cover is an inverted ekphrasis, in the sense that it wasn't the text that was inspired by the image, but the other way round. It's a cover made up of verses and the images they evoke. The result resembles a surrealist exercise in the expression of dreams and the paths they create within us.
