TEBOGO

Francisco Morato, John Dikeman, Hugo Costa, Julien Tassin, and Aleksandar Škorić bring to the world their second discographic release under the collective name Colyalcolor—and thankfully so. Previously united on a self-titled album that was already exceptional, they now return with TEBOGO, reinforcing their identity as a band, their connection to free jazz and to avant-garde forms of this giant musical dialect, and displaying an incredible maturity.
I won't waste time or words trying to prove that this record belongs among the great works of free jazz, free improvisation, and the crossings in between. Nor will I be drawn into comparisons with the great names… This record is a tribute in and of itself. It needs no comparisons.
It is not merely a tribute to Tebogo, nor only to the great names Francisco cites in the description of this album. It is a tremendous homage to the fusion of cultures, to the search for the creative and generative impulse of the human being, to the transposition of musical elements of different natures, to the crossing of childhood memories with free and curious creativity, to Portuguese folklore (which will certainly touch many hearts that belong to this cultural universe), and to its capacity for invention, reinvention, and recreation.
Beyond all this, it takes a very attentive look at what we are all feeling in these turbulent times. And where everything seems black and white, Colyalcolor comes to bring the color our days so desperately need. The color of the heart, the color of blood, of resistance, resilience, and courage.
TEBOGO is here, honoring ancestral voices in the fight against injustice, greed, fear, ignorance, racial violence, gender-based violence, all forms of violence, and calling for freedom, diversity, and love.
